Pudding Ice Cream Sandwiches, Nine Of The UK's Best Pubs & A Restaurant Of The Year Nod
Pudding-Inspired Ice Cream Sandwiches: Jean's Ice Cream is a new micro-creamery from Kelly Sealey, who you might know from the Kapao Thai pop-ups at Coexist Community Kitchen in Easton. Named after her grandmother, it's built around the puddings she grew up eating, given a second life as small batch ice cream sandwiches. Sticky Toffee Custard Cream, Silky Vanilla Parfait and Black Cherry stracciatella are among the first flavours. You can buy directly from The Public Market from August, and traders can order small batches through the Instagram page. The long-term dream is a permanent Jean's parlour, cafe and deli, so consider this the ground floor.
Nine Bristol Pubs Make A National List: The Telegraph has named nine Bristol pubs among the best in the country, chosen by a panel of six experts for "charming character, welcoming staff, rich history and, of course, award-winning beer". It's an extension of their England-focused list from 2025, now taking in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Plenty of the Bristol entries were also panel picks in the EatDrink24/7 2026 guide, which is a decent sign the locals and the national critics agree for once. The panel say it isn't their final verdict either: if standards drop, they'll get the chop!
Chew Valley Chef Up For A National Award: The Pony Chew Valley has been shortlisted for Restaurant of the Year (Outside London) in the Food & Travel magazine reader awards. The Aug/Sept issue also carries a long piece on Josh Eggleton, tracing his route from kitchen porter at The Bear & Swan in Chew Magna, through a stint at a Michelin-starred hotel in Le Touquet, to taking over The Pony in March 2006 with his sister Holly. First day's takings were £15 on a ploughman's and a ham, egg and chips, and the ham and eggs are still on the menu. They're asking for votes and it takes about two minutes.

It's already up and running, and they're throwing a grand opening event on 5th September that the whole neighbourhood is invited to.
Big Food Ideas At The Arnolfini (26th Sept - 27th Sept): The FŌDA Symposium returns to Arnolfini on Saturday 26th September, with the wider festival running across both days. This year's four themes are Land (can we feed the UK), Sea (overfishing, waste and stewardship), Forest (agroforestry and why trees underpin our food systems) and Air (whether the table can help tackle loneliness). Symposium chairs Josh Eggleton, Xanthe Clay and Roger Saul are back, joined by chefs, producers, growers, campaigners and policy makers. Speakers and the Sunday masterclass programme are being announced over the coming weeks, and tickets are on their website now.
