New Scandi Cafe, Wine and Book Club Updates & A Beloved Sri Lankan Spot In Need

Sri Lankan Spot In Trouble: A fantastic independent Sri Lankan restaurant on Gloucester Road is facing a heartbreaking risk of closure. The Kandyan Bristol serves up incredible, properly authentic food at fair prices, like their brilliant clay pot curries and yellow rice, but they desperately need our support to keep the doors open. If you fancy some top-tier cooking, get yourself down to 405 Gloucester Rd pronto.

Fresh & Wild Opens In Redland: A gorgeous new cafe with a clean Scandinavian feel has officially opened on Redland Road. Run by life-long chef Kim Koniotes and her husband Alex, it sits right next door to fellow newcomers Little Loaf. Kim creates fresh bakes and vibrant salads daily based on whatever fruit and veg looks best rather than sticking to a rigid menu. They're open Tuesday to Sunday during the day, with plans for toastie breakfasts, cookery demos, and evening food talks coming soon.

BookCellar Launches June Book Pairing: The newly opened BookCellar at 100 Stokes Croft is a dedicated book club space serving up top-tier coffee and wine. They've just announced their new June pairing, matching Sarah Moss' latest release 'Ripeness' with a lovely Vernaccia di San Gimignano. You can pop into the shop to get 10% off when you try the two together. It's a proper lush way to spend an afternoon, plus their July book club picks are about to drop, so join the mailing list at bookcellar.uk to get involved.

Upcoming Food Events

Italian Wine Takeovers, Midsummer Seafood Feasts & Vineyard Garden Sipping

Nine courses of Italian bliss (24th June): Over at Bianchi's Restaurant, Pazzo is hosting a massive nine course wine dinner. They've invited three top tier winemakers over from Italy, Roberta Frassinelli, Marco Dioro, and Mauro Pavia. The makers will be alternating between rooms every third course to share their stories. It kicks off with a 6:30pm arrival for a 7pm sit down. It's £95 a head, but note that they can't cater to vegans for this one.

Barbecued seafood on the vines (26th June): Local favourites Noah's are taking their talents out of Bristol and heading over to The View at Wraxall Vineyard for a brilliant seafood feast cooked over the coals. To celebrate English Wine Week, they'll have a West Country wine flight available to buy on the night. It's £70 per person and starts at 6:30pm. You'll be sitting at long sharing tables, so it's a properly social affair.

Two decades of Whiteladies Rd Market (27th June): The iconic Whiteladies Road Market in Redland is hitting a massive milestone. It is officially 20 years since Sustainable Redland first set up those magic street stalls back in 2006. To celebrate, they're cutting into a special home baked cake on Saturday morning. Get yourself down there to show some love to the veteran traders and grab a slice.

Michelin star chef fusion night (3rd July): Antipodean café Burra in Redland is pairing up with Corks of Bristol for an unforgettable summer tasting evening. Burra's former Michelin star chef, Toru Yanada, has crafted a seasonal menu blending playful Japanese techniques with a modern Aussie lens. The Corks crew will be matching each course with exceptional wine pairings. It runs from 7pm to 11pm and spots are strictly limited.

Huge summer garden wine fair (3rd July - 5th July): A brand new festival is landing in the heart of Clifton Village. The Clifton Wine & Drinks Fair is taking over the beautiful Mall Gardens for a massive three day weekend tasting experience. For £14, you get a three and a half hour session to sample over 100 premium wines, craft spirits, and low alcohol alternatives. Plus, there will be local street food, pop up stalls, and free silent films in the central arena. There are six sessions across the weekend to choose from.
