A huge win for Wapping Wharf, national recognition for local beer, and a new coffee spot on Park Street
Ragù Awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand: Massive congratulations are in order for Ragù at Wapping Wharf. They have just been awarded a prestigious Bib Gourmand by Michelin. Michelin inspectors praised owners Mark and Karen Chapman (who are also behind COR on North Street) for offering "the pure joy of classic Italian cooking in simple surroundings". It’s a well-deserved accolade for a spot that consistently delivers quality and value.
Wiper and True in The Times: It’s always great to see Bristol producers getting national love. Wiper and True’s 'Kaleidoscope' alcohol-free pale ale was featured in The Times and The Sunday Times Magazine this week. Renowned beer writer Pete Brown named it one of the best alcohol-free beers to buy, a testament to the care the team puts into their brewing.
Food Unfiltered Visits Bristol: The Food Unfiltered YouTube channel dropped a new video covering their recent trip to the city. They hit up some heavy hitters including Oowee Diner, Bianchis, and Wilsons Bread Shop. It’s well worth a watch.
Blank Street Opening: We try and focus on independents here, so we’ll keep this one short, but it felt worth mentioning that the viral coffee chain Blank Street is opening its first Bristol location at 82 Park Street (the old Fred Perry shop).
Upcoming Food Events
From Lunar New Year feasts to a unique pie collaboration and a Clifton Village pop-up
Clouds Bristol Events (Throughout Feb): The team at Clouds have a packed month ahead. They are kicking off with a new accessible dining night tomorrow (Feb 10th), followed by a Lunar New Year feast (17th) and a low-intervention wine tasting with Spiegel & Peach (24th). It’s a solid lineup - check out their latest post for the full lowdown and booking details.
Whisky and Cheese Tasting (Feb 14th): If you’re looking for a Valentine's (or anti-Valentine's) treat, Spirited on North Street is hosting a tasting session from 4pm to 7pm. They’ve paired three whiskies with three cheeses, with an example line up on the Eventbrite page. Tickets are £30.
Lunar New Year Recommendations (Feb 17th): The Year of the Fire Horse is upon us. If you are looking for spots to celebrate, @foodieinbristol has shared their top picks: Wangs for bold sharing plates, Mayflower for an authentic Cantonese feast, and The Beehive for their curry beef brisket. 168 Kitchen on Nelson Street is also a shout for some of the freshest dim sum in the city.
Bokman x Dongnae Pie Collaboration (Mar 5th): This sounds incredible. The husband-and-wife team behind Bokman and Dongnae are taking over the kitchen at The Three Horseshoes pub. They are serving a "Pigs Head, Kimchi, Potato & Oyster Pie" - a riff on a St John classic. Bookings are open for lunch and dinner.
Free From Festival (Mar 7th): Taking place at DOCUMENT in St Jude's, this is the UK’s only Gluten & Dairy Free food festival. It runs all weekend (7th and 8th), featuring street food, demos, and artisan products that you can sample without the worry.
Clifton Village Pop-Up (Easter/April): The empty site in Clifton Village (formerly the ice rink) is finally getting some life. The Pony Group (owners of Root, Salt & Malt, The Kensington Arms and more) is planning to open a pop-up restaurant there, hopefully by Easter. It’s a "meanwhile use" for the site, but with Josh Eggleton involved, it’s bound to be good.
Bristol Coffee Festival (Sep 12th): A bit of a look ahead, but if you book an early bird ticket before March 31st, you might help secure coffee legend James Hoffman for the main stage. The organizers need to sell 1000 tickets to make it happen, so if you’re a coffee nerd, get booking.
Local Highlight
Gullus Kitchen

This week we’re in BS16 highlighting Gullu’s Kitchen, a family-run favourite that’s been grabbing national headlines. With a takeaway in Fishponds and a restaurant/bar in Staple Hill, they serve authentic Jamaican food cooked daily on a traditional Jerk Pan - you literally smell the smoke before you see the shop.
Owner Pun (taught by his father Gullu) has clearly mastered the art, having rave reviews from the likes of Rick Stein (featured on his Food Stories series) and Matt Tebbutt, who recently visited to see if it really is the best Caribbean food in the UK.
What to order: The best dishes on the menu are undoubtedly the Jerk Chicken (marinated overnight), the rich Curry Goat, and the Brown Stew Chicken. If you're at the bar, look out for Pun’s Punch.
That’s it for this week.
