National Critic Praise, Wapping Wharf Additions & Nicaraguan Coffee
Jay Rayner Praises Bristol Indies: Renowned food critic Jay Rayner has officially declared Bristol the best city in the UK for indie restaurants. In his latest column, he urged the city to "never change" after visiting Other on Cannon Street. He praised head chef Zak Hitchman's vibrant and comforting food, highlighting the mouth-watering sweet-sour dill pickled cucumbers and Indian spiced aioli. Rayner also popped down to Wapping Wharf for lunch at Ragù, a small-plates Italian spot housed in a former shipping container. He absolutely loved the deep-fried artichokes and candy-coloured trout crudo. If it's good enough for Jay, it's definitely good enough for us!
Pinkmans Opens At Wapping Wharf: Pinkmans Cafe & Bakery is expanding. They're opening a brand new spot at CARGO 2 in Wapping Wharf on Wednesday, April 15. It's always brilliant to see local vendors setting up shop in such an iconic food hub.
Crave Finally Opens Its Doors: We've been eagerly waiting for this one. Crave Restaurant is officially opening on Thursday, April 16th from 5pm. The team had a special friends and family night last Friday to test their new offering and gather some invaluable feedback before the big launch. It looks like they're building something truly special, so get yourselves booked in for a proper feed.
Nicaragua Inspired Cafe Hits Bedminster: East Street has just landed a new spot called Motmot. Run by Pete Blacow, who co-owns the cafe at Lost Horizon, this solo venture takes over the former Alpha Bottle Shop & Taproom space. Named after Nicaragua's national bird, Motmot celebrates Central American coffee culture with pour-over and espresso options. The team transformed the Imperial Arcade space with tropical plants and vibrant colours. Pete even has plans to open an outside pavement area and host live music in the future.
New Coffee Studio In Bedminster: If you want to connect more deeply with your morning brew, Contour Coffee has just opened in the Willway Yard shipping containers. Owner Sonny King, who used to work at Clifton Coffee and Triple Co Roast, calls the space a "coffee studio". It isn't a traditional cafe, but you can drop in to buy freshly roasted beans. The intimate environment will also host small-batch roasting workshops and tastings. It's the perfect place to learn the science and intuition behind a banging cup of coffee.

Local Highlight
Clark’s Pies
If you call yourself a Bristol foodie and you haven't wrapped your hands around a proper Clark's Pie, it's time to have a word with yourself! Tucked away at 259 North Street in Ashton Gate, this bakehouse is an absolute Bristol institution. The story actually started in Cardiff a hundred years ago, but Mary Clark's son Percy brought the family recipe to Old Market in 1929. By 1935, they moved to their current North Street spot to keep the hungry workers at the nearby Wills cigarette factory fed. Funnily enough, the current management team of Keith Prested and Dawn Clark actually retired as professional ballet dancers before taking the reigns. Going from pirouettes to pastry is a career pivot we can fully get behind!
Everything is made from scratch and baked fresh each morning right there in the BS3 bakehouse. The traditional Clark's Pie is the undeniable local favourite, famous for a pastry jacket thick enough to eat on the go without a flimsy foil tray getting in the way. It's packed with a traditional mix of beef, ox kidneys, potatoes, onions, and their legendary secret gravy. If you fancy trying a newer addition, the Steak and Ale pie is an absolute cracker. They cook diced skirt steak in Red Ale sourced directly from the Bristol Beer Factory just around the corner, finishing it off with a perfectly flaky lid. Grab yourself a pie, find a good spot to sit, and enjoy a proper taste of Bristol history.
