BFN Premium Update - A new discount code, and a one off deal!
Last week we launched a brand new section, Local Discount Codes, exclusive to BFN Premium members. We're working with Bristol's best independent food businesses to get you money off, and we're adding to the list as more come on board.
This week we're adding Gurt Lush Food Co, with 15% off your whole order for members. That sits alongside 20% off everything at Easton Chilli, and there are more on the way, including GingerBeard's Preserves.
To celebrate, we're taking 20% off annual BFN Premium memberships. That's £48 for your first year instead of £60, which works out at just £4 a month.
BFN Premium is the main way we keep this newsletter running. So on top of every discount code, the BFN Food Map, the Weekly Deal Scout and the Event Calendar, you'll be helping keep BFN going for years to come.
Run a local food business? If you're a producer, a restaurant owner, or anything in between, and you fancy offering BFN members a discount, give us a shout. We'd love to have you on the list.
New Openings & Recent Reviews
Box-E Bows Out, Fried Chicken On Whiteladies Road & A New Gloucester Road Pub
Box-E Closes After Ten Years: Tess and Elliott Lidstone are closing Box-E, their tiny shipping container restaurant at Wapping Wharf, after its tenth birthday on Saturday 17th October. One chef and a couple of dozen seats, and it's often been named among the UK's best restaurants. They say it isn't supposed to be sad. They want to "end high, busy and enjoying it" and spend more time with their girls. Thousands of pannacottas and tens of thousands of pounds for Bristol charities later, you've got about a month to get a table.
Fried Chicken On Whiteladies Road: Feather opens this Friday, 18th September, at 105 Whiteladies Road, in the old Veburger site. It's a fried chicken restaurant promising "poultry-led dishes, good wine, cocktails and a warm lively dining room". The team say it's been six months in the making and call it "poultry taken to the next level". Expect it to be casual and friendly, with the emphasis on fresh, high quality food. No menu has been shared yet.
A Fresh Start For The Cider Press: The former Cider Press on Gloucester Road in Bishopston has reopened as The Two Suns, now run by Guerrilla Pubs, the local group behind The Kingsdown Vaults, The Stag & Hounds and The Old England. The name nods to the site's past lives as The Rising Sun pub and Sun Valley restaurant. The group's own Guerrilla Burger are involved on the food side, and the refurb brings murals from three Bristol street artists. At the bar there are four rotating IPAs and five ciders, from the likes of Wiper & True, Thatchers and Jubel.
A Slice Of Kerry On Small Street: Nancy Spains, the Irish pub group run by brothers Peter and Nicholas O'Halloran, is coming to Bristol in November. It's taking over 15 Small Street, the old Hall Pass, Big Chill Bar and Native site. The brothers are from County Kerry and insist it's "not your typical Irish bar", with the focus on the energy of home rather than shamrocks and green paint. Expect live music any night of the week.

Upcoming Food Events
Al Pastor Tacos, Grand Cru Champagne & A Whole Lot Of Pig
Al Pastor Tacos At KASK² (18th Sept - 26th Sept): Tacos El Pirata are taking over KASK² for four nights across two weekends: Friday 18th, Saturday 19th, Friday 25th and Saturday 26th September. They're cooking al pastor, "just like they do it in Mexico". KASK is the wine bar whose Instagram name is literally "Say No To Shit Wine", so you'll be well looked after for something to drink with it.
An Olive Oil Supper Club (21st Sept): Veysel are taking over The Granary next Monday for a one-night supper club built around their hand-harvested extra virgin olive oil. It's four courses of Turkish-inspired sharing plates, cooked by The Granary's James alongside Chef Max from Holt's, with cocktails and "a little friendly competition" thrown in. It starts at 6pm and tickets are £60.
Seafood Tasting Menu On Chandos Road (29th Sept): One Fish Street are bringing back the seafood tasting menu that was a big part of their five years in Cornwall, and they plan to make it a regular thing. Expect a substantial run of sustainably sourced, seasonal seafood courses. It's £75 a head with a 7pm start, and there's a matching wine pairing if you want it. Tickets are on their website.
Pork And Portuguese Wine At Root (6th Oct): Root's chef Charlotte has been rearing pigs at her smallholding in Backwell, and this dinner puts her pork centre stage. It's a generous feast using some of the less-used cuts, served in waves, each one paired with a Portuguese wine from their neighbours Port O'Bristol. Anton and Lela from Port O'Bristol will be there to talk through the wines and the stories behind them. Root is at Cargo 1 on Gaol Ferry Steps. Because of the menu, they can't do dietary requirements or substitutions.
Two Special Nights At The Kenny (8th Oct & 13th Oct): The Kensington Arms in Redland have two evenings worth booking. First up, Max Carpenter from their kitchen is cooking a tasting menu. He's Bristol born, and spent ten years in London and a year in New York, including stints at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and Eleven Madison Park. They reckon it's fantastic value. Then Sophie Dethune of Champagne Paul Dethune is over from Ambonnay, pouring five grand cru champagnes alongside a five-course tasting menu, with her notes on each. Both book online.
