Best pub roast in years, special community shout out & what’s next for Fresh Bakery

Best Pub Roast In Years: If you're looking for a proper day trip out of Bristol to escape the city for a bit, you've got to try this. Celebrity chef Marco Pierre White's been singing the praises of The Ship Inn in Brimscombe, Stroud. He's reportedly been driving 50 miles just to tuck into one of their Sunday roasts, calling it the best pub lunch he's had in years. It's about an hour's drive from Bristol, but with television personality Carol Vorderman and plenty of locals also raving about it, it sounds well worth the trip.

MeiMei Replacing Fresh Bakery: It's a bit of a sad goodbye for Fairfax Street's unassuming Cantonese gem, Fresh Bakery, which has officially closed its doors. The good news is the team isn't going far; they're opening a brand new spot right next door called MeiMei, set to launch at the end of July or the beginning of August. Expect plenty of love for their legendary food when the new place opens.

Community Shout Out: The recent Bristol heat might be dropping, but we've gotta show some love to the team at Black Cumin. During the peak of the heatwave, they were handing out free lassi to cool down passers by. If you haven't been down to check them out yet, pop by and show them some support for being such top-tier legends in the community.

Upcoming Food Events

Japanese + Antipodean fusion, Soft Buoys collab & Bianchis’ 12-course birthday celebration

Fusion Flavours & Fine Wine (3rd July): Head over to Burra in Redland for a special one-night-only dining experience. Former Michelin-star chef Toru Yanada has whipped up a seasonal menu that blends Japanese technique with a modern Antipodean lens. To make things even better, the folks at Corks of Bristol are pairing each course with some top-tier wines, ranging from crisp whites to elegant reds and a few surprises. Seats are limited, so you'll want to get yours booked pronto.

Ice Cold Drinks & Fresh Oysters (5th July): If you're looking for an excuse to get the gang together, Carmen Street Wine Bar in Stokes Croft is teaming up with Soft Buoys for a massive Sunday collab. From 12pm, they'll be serving up signature soft serve and toasties alongside discounted Negronis, Guinness, plenty of wine, and fresh oysters with crispy fries. It's a one-day-only event, so rock up hungry and stay all day long.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party (8th July): Celebrate the absolute best of our city's food scene at the EatDrink24/7 Launch Party, hosted at Wiper and True Brewery & Taproom in Old Market. You'll need to grab a ticket for this one, which gets you in to enjoy exclusive, one-off food collabs like Box-E x Squeezed and Big Nath’s x Danny’s Burgers. There's live music from Femmes on Decks to soundtrack the night, and the first 300 guests down there score a complimentary beer in a limited-edition commemorative Kaleidoscope can.

Cider Myths & Devonian Magic (23rd July): The Bristol Cider Club is bringing a grand evening of folklore, storytelling, and plenty of Westcountry mischief to Windmill Hill City Farm. Guided by Barny Butterfield, founder of Sandford Orchards, you'll taste six remarkable ciders grown in Devon's deep red earth. This isn't your average tasting either; expect live folk music from BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominee Jim Causley and plenty of laughs with local raconteur Bill Murray.

A Decade of Epic Pasta (26th July): Local legends Bianchis are turning 10, and they're celebrating properly by taking over their flagship Montpelier restaurant for a huge trip down memory lane. They're serving a mind-blowing 12-course menu, featuring one iconic dish from every single chapter of Bianchis’ history, including the welcome return of a certain legendary carbonara. Tickets are £100 per person, which includes a welcome drink, and all profits go straight to their community arm, Studio Bianchis. There are sittings at 1pm and 5:30pm, so email Magda to grab a spot.
