England Rugby Stars' Cafe, A Top 20 Chippy & Records With Your Pizza
England Rugby Stars Open A Cafe: Three framed rugby shirts in the corner spell out the name at 129 Coffee, a new cafe on Ryves Vale in Tickenham. It's owned by Ellis Genge (1), Luke Cowan-Dickie (2) and Harry Randall (9), who have all played for England together. The coffee is from Clifton Coffee, and the cakes are from Cakesmiths, including carrot cake, cinnamon buns and morello cherry blondies. There are around 20 seats. They're also looking for a bakery partner to get fresh pasties and bread on the counter.
Same Again Makes The 50 Best: Same Again, the little riverside bar that only opened in January, has been named on The 50 Best Bars' Best New Openings list. The team call it "genuinely extraordinary", and it's a big moment for a Bristol bar that isn't a year old yet. Their first birthday is coming up soon.
A Top 20 Chippy On Filton Avenue: Jolly Fryer on Filton Avenue is one of 20 semi-finalists in the National Fish & Chip Awards, and the only Bristol chippy to make the list. Stamatis Lomvardos opened it in 1986. It closed in 2018, and his son Nick brought it back nearly four years ago. Nick also runs Bishopston Fish Bar on Gloucester Road. As well as the classics there's halloumi, steamed and grilled fish, and gluten-free dishes. The final ten are revealed in December.
Records And Pizza On Cheltenham Road: Super Nature is now open in the former Social on Cheltenham Road. It's a music-led cafe and bar from best friends Sophie Redmond and Ben Woodruff, with a record shop run by Disk Frisk in the corner. Gigi's Pizza are in the kitchen with a much bigger menu than their usual slices: 14-inch tavern-style pizzas, chicken parmigiana and vodka rigatoni. There's also a Supernatural lager brewed with New Bristol Brewery, plus coffee, cocktails and wine.
The Orchard Team Open HOTTIE: The team behind The Orchard Coffee Co have opened HOTTIE, a bakery spot in a former brewery in St Werburghs. It's their next chapter after losing their St George home of ten years in August. In September they told us they were taking over Fierce & Noble on Mina Road, with a new name on the way. Their promise then was the same obsession with good coffee, great beer and proper pastries.
Paramedics Swap Ambulance For Coffee: Casual Tea is a new coffee van from three paramedics, Nadine Parnham, Chelsie Knightsmith and Kat Beckley, who met at UWE in 2009. They're still on the front line with South Western Ambulance Service too. The plan was an ambulance, until they worried people would think they were first aid. So it's a green and white caravan, soft-launched at Downend Business Park. Look out for the IV latte (iced vanilla) and the nightshift, a triple shot. There's no permanent pitch yet.
Upcoming Food Events
A Michelin Chef's Burger, A Georgian Feast & Beaujolais Night At Lapin
Jan Ostle's Venison Burger At Milk Bun (4th Nov): Milk Bun is launching its first ever Chef Series at its Clifton restaurant on Wednesday 4th November. First up is Jan Ostle from Michelin-starred Wilsons, cooking a special Sika venison burger with some clever twists on the fries and dip. There's a cocktail and a wine pairing to go with it, and sittings at 5pm or 8pm. A Michelin chef doing a burger for one night is exactly our kind of thing. It's monthly from here, with the Bokman and Dongnae team, Margot Henderson and Landrace's Rob Sachdev still to come.
Buy A Bowl, Give A Bowl (9th Nov): Jefes Ramen are taking over The Punchbowl on Old Market Street on Monday 9th November, 6pm to 10pm. For every bowl you buy, they cook a second for someone experiencing homelessness, through local charities. Pick from Tokyo Chick, a shoyu chicken ramen, the Miso Shroom, or The Big Baloo, a full English in ramen form with brisket, maple bacon and tater tots. Presale closes at midnight tonight with 20% off or a free side. After that it's walk-ins only.
British Takeaways, Tasting Menu Style (12th Nov): Caper & Cure on Stokes Croft is doing a tasting menu inspired by British takeaways on Thursday 12th November. Chefs Mirai, Theo and Alex are cooking. It's £65 a head with a £20 deposit. There's no menu out yet, so half the fun is guessing which Friday night favourites get the tasting menu treatment.
Beaujolais Night At Lapin (19th Nov): Beaujolais Nouveau lands on Thursday 19th November, and Lapin is marking it with a one-night dinner from 5.30pm, at £45 a head. It's a tradition that goes back to the 1800s and the end of the harvest. The menu is proper French comfort: pig's head croquettes, coq au vin, then pears poached in Beaujolais with a wedge of Roquefort. Each course comes with some of the season's best bottles.
A Georgian Supra In Hotwells (21st Nov): The Bristol Tbilisi Association's annual supra is on Saturday 21st November, 6.30pm to 9.30pm, at Holy Trinity Church on Hotwell Road. A supra is a Georgian feast built around food and toasts, and this one has Georgian food, Georgian wine and Georgian singing. You don't see much Georgian cooking in Bristol, so this is a lovely chance to try it.
Mushrooms, Truffles And Big Reds (25th Nov): Poco on Jamaica Street is putting on a one-night-only autumn dinner on Wednesday 25th November at 7pm. It's four courses of wild mushrooms and truffle, each matched with a red wine. Their sommelier Dan hosts, and he'll talk you through why each pairing works. It's £54 a head and places are limited. Truffle, big reds and a cold November night sounds about right to us.
A Festive Supper Club At Pazzo (13th Dec): Serving's festive menu is back on Sunday 13th December, 6.30pm to 9.30pm, at Pazzo by Bianchis on Whiteladies Road. It's a full three-course festive menu that works for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. Serving is a queer-run non-profit supper club raising money for gender-affirming care, with over £10,000 donated so far. Tickets for their last festive menu went fast. The venue is down a flight of stairs, so it isn't suitable for wheelchair users.
